It’s Official! The IRS Approved Our 501c3 Application!

It’s time to celebrate! Talons Out Honor Flight is officially a 501(c)3 tax-exempt non-profit organization! We’re so excited to have the official notice from the IRS.

See the interview on WWMT

First question – Does this mean my donation to Talons Out Honor Flight before this isn’t tax deductible?

NO! Actually, the 501(c)3 designation is retroactive to our founding date in April, 2013. So every donation we’ve received is tax deductible (always consult your tax adviser about your donations & exemptions).

Second question – What does this mean for Talons Out?

This means every donation, small to large, is tax deductible. We hope this opens the doors for businesses and foundations who’d like to support our mission, that rely on the 501(c)3 designation for their records.

We’re so excited to share this information with everyone. If you have further questions or want to learn more about the designation (and see the official letter), visit our “Financials” section of the website:

As always, thank you for your support in this mission to honor our Greatest Generation.

All Night Ski-a-Thon to Benefit Talons Out Honor Flight

UPDATE: Due to logistics beyond our control, the event will not run through the night. We will ski until approximately 2:00am – which for many of us probably feels like all night. Thank you to everyone who has helped spread the word. We look forward to seeing you there!

After much planning, we’re so very excited to announce a new fundraiser quickly approaching! All of this snow should help make this event just perfect. Join us March 7th at 6:00pm to kick off the first ever “Talons Out Honor Flight Ski-a-Thon Benefit at Timber Ridge Ski Area!”

Skiers will have the chance to do something that normally gets them arrested – ski past closing time at Timber Ridge! Below is the detailed information, which is also available in PDF format here.

West Michigan skiers and snowboarders have the chance for a unique experience at Timber Ridge Ski Area Friday night, March 7. As a fundraiser for Talons Out Honor Flight, Timber Ridge will host an all-night ski-a-thon. Skiers and snowboarders will be able to take pledges for each “run” they take, or straight donations to help Talons Out fund their May flight.

The “Talons Out Honor Flight Ski-a-thon Benefit at Timber Ridge Ski Area” kicks off Friday evening March 7 at 6:00pm, and runs through the night until 6:00am the next morning. Skiers and snowboarders can take advantage of the lodge with free hot chocolate & coffee and some fun snacks through the night. A pancake breakfast is included for the morning to celebrate the successful fundraiser.

“We’re humbled – and of course stoked – that Timber Ridge wants to put on this great event,” Talons Out Vice President Dan Moyle says. “Not only will people be able to ski in the middle of the night – which is not normally allowed – but they’re helping to honor our West Michigan heroes by helping us send them to Washington, D.C.”

Skiers can take part as individuals or teams of up-to 5. A minimum of $20 donation per person is required to ski. Skiers must have their own equipment – due to the conditions of skiing at night, this event is for intermediate and expert skiers only, please. Interested skiers and snowboarders can contact Timber Ridge Ski Area at 269.694.9449 or online at for details and forms. You may also contact Dan Moyle with Talons Out Honor Flight with questions.

Exciting Announcement: Talons Out Supported by Kalamazoo Growlers Baseball

kalamazoo-growlers-primary-logo1The good news: baseball is back in Kalamazoo! The Kalamazoo Growlers will play at Mayor’s Riverfront Park at Homer Stryker Field. The home opener is Friday, May 30th. The Growlers are part of the Northwoods League. Now for the even better news: the Growlers are supporting Talons Out Honor Flight!

The Growlers approached us to see how they could help send World War II Veterans on an Honor Flight. Here’s what we came up with. Talons Out will sell tickets to the July 17th “Military Appreciation Night” for a special price, and will receive a portion of the ticket sales! For $15 a ticket, you get into the game, a food voucher for a hot dog, chips and soda plus a growlers hat! Then, $5 of that ticket helps support Talons Out directly. Plus, we’ll be there that night honoring some of our own Veterans, as well as the military in and around Kalamazoo.

From the Kalamazoo Growlers news release:

The Kalamazoo Growlers are excited to announce a new fundraising collaboration with local non-profit organization Talons Out Honor Flight. Talons Out will be selling 200+ tickets for the Growlers’ July 17 Military Appreciation Night. $5 from every ticket sold by the organization will go toward providing honoring American War Veterans with an all-expenses paid trip to see their Memorial in Washington D.C.

“It’s so exciting to have baseball back in Kalamazoo! We’re happy to partner with the Kalamazoo Growlers this year. Not only do we get to honor all of our Veterans on July 17, but we’re so thrilled to feature our area’s World Ware II Vets and our mission to honor them,” said Talons Out Honor Flight President Bobbie Bradley.

Assistant General Manager Shane Stout said, “Military Veterans hold a very special place in the Growlers Family. We are privileged to work with such a unique and amazing cause in Talons Out Honor Flight. Without the sacrifice of our military men and women we would not be able to have the freedom to play the sport of baseball, America’s pastime. To this we are dedicated to helping our Veterans and current serving military personnel.”

Talons Out will have tickets soon. If you’d like to start reserving your tickets, you can email Talons Out here.

Thank you to the Kalamazoo Growlers baseball club for this support. We’re truly humbled by the outreach from our community to help honor our heroes with one last mission.
